This Spring, my co-worker and I challenged each other to finish a drawing a day for Lent. That meant 40 days of continual drawing- with the end result being 40 finished, reasonably complex sketches. As if the humiliation of defeat wasn't enough, we agreed to pay up a dollar for every day missed. So the game was on. I decided for my benefit to focus on the figure and to copy drawings by Bouguereau, Raphael, Andrew Loomis and a few others. She opted to copy Bridgman's big figure drawing book chapter by chapter. We both finished pretty well, and neither of us lost too much money out of the deal (maybe 4 bucks between us). Overall, I think it was a successful project- it really put pressure on me to produce work, even when I didn't want to. Beyond that however, I think my ability to render the figure may have improved- as well as my grasp of line and value.
Here are a few examples of the work. All of the drawings are on a 9 x 12 inch sheet, and are rendered in graphite.
